First Haircut

The mullet had to go.

As much as I wanted Mattie's hair to grow out and look beautiful and feminine - it was doing quite the opposite.  One chunk of hair in the middle of her head was growing long while the rest of her hair was at a standstill.  She was well on her way to being Miss Jo Dirt for Halloween, but buying a wig wouldn't be necessary - she had that part covered.

If you haven't seen the mullet in person, this picture somewhat gives an idea of what we were working with - I think I may have been avoiding taking pictures of Mattie from behind because the mullet was getting so bad.

Her first haircut was a huge success!  Not only did Mattie sit patiently while the lady cut her hair, but the cut actually looks really cute.  She gave Mattie a little bob in the back that will hopefully begin to grow at a more equal rate.

This was a before picture with her ponytail still on top of her head.

Almost done...

Blowing it dry
Mattie loves the new 'do and so do we!  And I can't leave out Evan...he also got his hair cut and was awesome the whole time - as usual.

School Pictures

Like I need to spend money to add to my massive picture collection of Evan - but there's something about school pictures, no matter how they turn out, that screams "memories" or, better yet, "blackmail" and entices parents to write that check.  Parents do it year after year.  My parents purchased all of our horrendous shots and Robert's parents did the same.

In many of my earlier school pictures I'm sporting what my mom referred to as the "Dorothy Hamill" hairdo.  How exactly a five year old was supposed to pull that look off still baffles me - which is why many people thought my parents had four sons rather than three. And of course there's at least six years worth of school pictures to prove it.  Like this one:

Not only is this hairdo lacking all feminine qualities (note the pseudo rat tail in the back), but I believe the Polo shirt was a hand me down from an older brother.  So much for ribbons and bows I guess.  And this picture is actually cute compared to the following five years.  My mom did make a point to throw a little make -up on my face.

Even with years of embarrassing pictures on hand I understand why parents buy school pictures.  The backdrops may be ugly, the lighting dreadful and the poses outrageously lame - but these are pictures unlike any others and they become a time line of sorts.  Not only is the change in age captured, but culture and fashion as well.  There always seems to be a great story behind each picture taken and that now rings true for Evan too.

How many parents forget that it's picture day?  Well, you can add the Stinnetts to that pool of losers.  We sent Evan to school in his closet's finest with his hair neatly combed and styled - quite the opposite actually.  Mom called him Farmer Fred when she saw the picture.  It may not be the greatest picture, but it's the first of many to come and I absolutely LOVE it - the brown, cloudy background and all.

We're In The Army Now

The last time I took Evan to have his hair trimmed they charged me the INSANE price of $13. I about gave the lady a "YOU'RE KIDDING ME, RIGHT?" But I just chuckled to myself, paid for it and vowed to never pay for his haircut again. It's amazing how things can backfire on you.

We have trimmed Evan's hair a couple of times since his birth, but nothing too extreme. Over the past 15 months his hair has stayed relatively the same length on top, but has become excessively thick in the back. He was beginning to have this hideous overhang of hair on his shirt collar and we decided we couldn't tolerate it anymore. Staying true to my vow of never paying for a haircut, Robert attempted to give Evan a haircut just to thin out the back a bit...

Robert's attempt left Evan with a Billy Ray Cyrus 'do that was not gonna work for me. I gave in to my unwillingness of wanting to pay for his haircut and took him to a barber.

I explained to the barber that I all I wanted was for him to thin out the back of Evan's hair giving an all over even cut. I wasn't aware that I had to also instruct him on what tools I wanted him to use. I was sitting in the seat with Evan on my lap and all of sudden we were both startled by the loud buzzing of the shears he used to buzz all of Evan's hair off in a matter of seconds. I never even saw it coming. What happened to using scissors? Seeing all those long, fine baby hairs dump into my lap in clumps made me really sad. When the barber was done and I looked at Evan in the mirror all I could think of doing was saluting him...we were already sending him off to bootcamp. Does this mean we have an Army brat? (ha ha) And to really add salt to the wound I had to pay $12 for this insanity!

Meet Evan Dirt

Robert and I agreed that it was time to give Evan a trim around the ears and along his neck. Those long baby hairs have been hanging over his ears for a few weeks now and we've been joking about how our "redneck" kid is due for a haircut. Robert confidently took the scissors and against my urgings began cutting. But really, there was no beginning and end...Robert literally took the scissors and in one motion chopped the entire left side off above the ear. Evan is no longer a Stinnett, but a Dirt. Evan, meet Joe Dirt, your new Daddy. Evidently mullets are back, but still whack!
