Fall Brings Soccer

We've moved on from baseball to soccer.  Not having one second of experience with the sport, we weren't sure how the first game was going to turn out - but amazingly, it went pretty well.

Evan had a bit of performance anxiety at first, but after a a few pep talks he got his head into the game.  He loves to run, so soccer seems to be more desirable than baseball so far.  He seems genuinely excited to play - and that is a big plus in our book.

Game two was also a success and we got our first win!  The pictures that I thought I was taking during the first game some how did not actually take - but I definitely got a few from this one...

Here's the Latest

Unfortunately, when I say the latest, that means I'm about do a super brief coverage of the last few months.  I've been so bad about updating this blog that I find myself trying to catch everyone (including myself) up in one posting - my detailed postings from long ago are just that...from long ago - when life was simpler :)  But not nearly as exciting!

So, here goes...

Mattie Jane is now wearing panties!  She has done so awesome with potty training the last few weeks.  Other than a few wet diapers in the morning, she has managed to keep her diapers dry all day long.  Poopin' hasn't been quite as successful, but we're crossing our fingers that the transition to panties will encourage more potty use when she gets the urge.

In addition to potty training, Mattie also transitioned to a big girl bed back in December.  We are in the process of adding the final touches to her big girl room - I will add a few pictures very soon.  But here's a little sneak peek...

In terms of growth and development, we are wondering where our baby girl has gone!  Mattie's vocabulary has exploded over the past six months and she has continued growing like a weed since birth.   She currently wears a 3T, but anything I buy from this point on will be a 4T.  She's snug as a bug in a rug in her 3Ts.

We're currently working on breaking the paci habit.  Mattie HAS to have her paci when she goes to bed.  Not only does she have to have one in her mouth, but she has to have a few reserves too.

I wonder if Dora and Boots would mind helping us out with this one...any one know how we can get in touch with them?  We're gonna need to bring in reinforcements for this one.

As for Evan - we now have a young man on our hands.  I am constantly blown away by his ability to think and reason.  He has a love for numbers and a love for learning in general.  He recently woke me up and said, "Mama, I can can count backwards."  Still half asleep I waited to hear "...10, 9, 8, 7..."  But instead I got "100, 99, 98, 97..." all the way to zero.  Yes, it was painful to sit there that long, but I was so impressed by this skill.  He then counted backwards from 100 by 10's and then 5's.  He recognizes and can write all of his numbers from 1 to 100 as well.

I am most impressed by these abilities because Evan just gets it.  He understands order and sequence which is the foundation for basic math.  He loves to read the clock and figure out how many minutes he has until his bedtime - and he always figures it out.

Evan is also excelling in reading.  He recognizes many of his sight words and also does a great job sounding out the words he is reading.  Because I am a teacher, I try really hard not to "over teach" Evan at home.  We take advantage of those teachable moments instead and he seems to respond positively to this.  Evan is very much a pleaser, so he loves to hear "good job" and "you're so smart" and all those encouraging phrases.

Since he began walking, Evan has walked on his toes.  For a long time we thought he would just grow out of it, but that has not been the case.  Here we are almost 4 years later and he is still perched up on those toes.

If he is bare footed and on a hard surface he will be high up on his toes, much like a ballerina.  With shoes on, he will rise up on his toes periodically, but most of the time he will walk flat footed.  But his flat footed walk doesn't look like the average flat footed walk.  He sways his hips a bit which tends to look feminine.

As concerned parents, we of course don't want Evan to suffer from any physical issues later on in life or any psychological issues from walking "differently."  We all know how evil school aged children can be.  I made contact with a physical therapist to see what, if anything, we could do to try and correct his issue.

We are about 4 sessions in, and while I don't think there will be a miraculous fix, I definitely learned a lot about what the underlying cause for the toe walking is and how we can work on resolving the issue over time.  In a nutshell, Evan walks on his toes because he has a weak core.  The therapist told me that because Evan started walking so early (10 1/2 months) and never crawled on his hands and knees, he never built up or strengthened his core.  So to compensate for this lack of strength, he walks up on his toes so his core is not doing most of the work.  That's also why when he does walk flat footed, it looks so awkward.  Consider me enlightened by this information.

So, believe it not, all those exercises I do at the gym are the same ones Evan needs to be doing at home.  We need to strengthen his core in order to take the load off his toes.  I'm thinking Evan and I should do Yoga videos together :)

While I love to brag about Evan and the wonderful big boy that he is, I will also say that he's annoying and gross just like the rest of the boys his age.  He constantly makes himself burp and calls his sister silly names just to make her mad.  He spits and hits, knowing how completely inappropriate it is.  But we of course understand that this is all normal - sometimes we have to hide our laughter (because it is actually funny at times) while other times we want to kill him.  And someday Mattie will probably get a good lick in for annoying things like this...

To wrap this posting up, I want to add that Robert was promoted to Regional Director for Wonderworks, Amanda and Scott welcomed Bryson Nash on February 7th and Todd and Barnes just had their first baby girl on February 16th!  We proudly welcome Olivia Katherine to the family!

Whew...that was a lot.

Dear Santa

Santa is more present than ever this year.  Evan believes that he is peering down on him at all times and watching every move.  Do you understand how awesome this is for discipline purposes?  All I have to say is "Santa just saw what you did!  You better improve your behavior quickly before he decides to give your gift to another little boy."  Usually Evan sheds a tear or two and then does the most amazing turn around!  I wish I had this leverage all year long.

Evan has been counting the days 'til Christmas since Thanksgiving.  Not only does he count down the dates, but he also tracks the days of the week too.  Every day he's been saying something like,"Mama, tomorrow will be Friday, number 21 and Christmas is on number 25.  Only 4 more days until Santa comes!"  Not only am I amazed by his calendar skills, but his spirit of Christmas is what the holiday is all about.  By his request, we have read The Night Before Christmas every night since the first week of December (thank you, Grandma Bopp).  We have also watched Home Alone every day for the past two weeks and sometimes even twice in one day.

Mattie and Evan take these positions every night to watch Home Alone in our bed.

Mattie is also very spirited this year, but in a different way.  She basically repeats whatever Evan is doing or saying, but gets a real kick out of all of it.  She loves singing Christmas songs and her favorite (and funniest) saying is, "Ho, Ho, Ho, Merry Christmas!"  She says it every time she sees Santa whether it be in person or a picture.

So, what's on the Christmas lists this year?  Mattie is simple.  She simply told Santa she wanted presents.  When encouraged to be more specific, she always says baby doll.  I'm pretty certain she has no clue what she wants.  Besides, she just wants to play with whatever Evan is playing with.

Evan's list is a little more involved.  His list for Santa is as follows:
  • race car
  • football
  • go cart
  • little cars (matchbox)
  • big car (not sure what he means by this)
  • baseball glove and baseball
  • light-up ball
  • gloves
  • boots
I think Santa can handle most of that.  I wish Christmas could stay this easy for future years, but we know they only become more specific and more expensive.  We'll have to enjoy this while it lasts!

Evan and Mattie had breakfast with Santa yesterday and they both got to rattle off their lists while smiling pretty for the camera.  Mattie was not afraid this year, but she still showed a little resistance - she's still suspicious of that beard.

Getting Ready for Christmas

I absolutely love the Christmas season - the decorating, the music, the shopping, the eating, the parties...the build up to December 25th is a natural high for me.

Christmas officially begins the weekend after Thanksgiving for us.  It's been our tradition to hunt down that perfect Christmas tree and have it up and decorated as a symbol of the start of the holiday season.

As always, we made a trip to Booth's Christmas Tree Farm in Conway to find our tree.

The past few years we chose a Leland Cypress, but we had problems with all of them drying out too quickly.  This year we opted for a Red Cedar.  The one we chose is big, full and has a nice shape - we are also very pleased with its amazing scent.  It's the first thing you smell when you walk in our house.

This sucker is so big, in fact, that we had to completely rearrange our living room just to accommodate its beastly self.  We actually like our new arrangement, so everything seemed to work out in the end.  Robert wussied out on cutting down the tree this year - I think it might've had something to do with the family beside us who brought along their chain saw and had their tree cut down in seconds.  Robert couldn't bear working that hand saw after seeing that - :)

Cutting down our own tree has to be one of my favorite experiences at Christmas time.  The kids LOVE it and there's something special about taking a tree straight from the ground to your living room.

In addition to our Christmas Tree Farm visit, we always attend the Murrells Inlet Christmas Parade.  Again, the kids LOVE it and it's actually a really great parade.  Lots of floats, great entertainment, and most importantly, lots of candy.

We are so excited for Santa's Claus this year!  I definitely have many things left to do in preparation for his arrival.  Only 10 more days!!

The Great Smoky Mountains

We changed it up a bit this year and decided to go west for our fall vacation.  There is nothing more beautiful than the month of October in the North Carolina/Tennessee Mountains.  We thought it would be a nice change from the sandy beaches of Florida.

It was a nice change alright - rainy and cloudy all week.  We got ONE nice day out of the entire week - but we got as much out of that day as possible.  In fact, we got as much out of every day as possible, despite the yucky weather.

We stayed in a beautiful cabin right outside of Gatlinburg, TN.  Driving up the steep driveway I thought to myself, "This is going to be so relaxing!"  I envisioned Robert and myself putting the kids to bed and relaxing in the hot tub that sat outside on the overlook deck.  The living room TV was visible from the deck so having Sunday night's NFL game on would be an added bonus.

SPOILER ALERT:  That vision did not become a reality.

Instead - we arrived at the cabin to find that it had not one set of solid pine, split-your-head-open-if-you fall stairs, but two.  So as we scrambled around trying to find a solution to this very serious problem, who do you think was trying to constantly go up and down each flight of steps?  Yes - the toddler...and very unstable-like of course.  After completely stressing ourselves out for about an hour or so, we finally just moved the loveseat right in front of the steps leading downstairs and found a leaf to the dining room table that we wedged between the spindles.  Tada!

We rallied the troops to get ready for bed around 8 pm and finally got snuggled on the couch around 8:30 pm.  We cracked open an adult beverage and looked at each other and smiled.   Ahhh...."finally," I said.  The hot tub was warming up and we were settling in for our first night of vacation...or at least we thought we were.

All of a sudden I hear a groaning sound coming from downstairs, followed by a wheezing/barking sound.  I rush down to find Mattie sitting up sounding like she was working very hard to breathe.  The noise was so frightening, I was expecting to her to be blue in the face when I turned on the light.  Her color was fine, but she wouldn't talk and her little chest was pumping as fast as it possibly could go.  We were freaked out.

Mattie has had issues in the past with cough and congestion when colder weather hits, but never anything quite this bad.  We attempted a steam bath and then a warm bath after that.  Every once in awhile she would show signs of joy.  Our confusion grew with every smile.  After about two hours of home remedies, we all laid down to see if sleep would be the answer.  That was a BIG negative.  Mattie struggled to catch her breath, which prompted her to sit up in the bed - laying down was not an option for her.

We finally decided to make a trip to the Emergency Room.  It was 12 am and we woke Evan up, got him dressed and we piled into the car.  We were lucky for a quick visit and the diagnosis ended up being croup.  She received a breathing treatment and a steroid and was breathing much better by the time we left.  I am so glad we made the decision to go to the hospital - even for just piece of mind.  That was a very scary situation that I never want to experience again.  We made it back home around 1:30 am.  Day one of vacation was GRRREAT.

****Oh, and Evan just reminded me that on the way to the hospital he tracked dog poop into Robert's car that he managed to smear all over our umbrella that we absolutely needed for the rainy, dreary weather the following day.  Awesome.

Despite day one, we did end up having a fun-filled vacation.  Robert had to work some, which put a little bit of a damper on things, but we made up for it with lots of activities.

We played putt-putt, raced go carts and rode silly rides...

We spent some time at the Aquarium to get out of the rain...

We visited Dollywood and had a FABULOUS time...

We took a ride up the mountain on the Sky Lift...

And we definitely did some lounging around...

We finished off our vacation with a night at the Wilderness Lodge.  This resort is very similar to Grey Wolf Lodge...indoor waterpark and play arena.  The kids loved it.  We will definitely plan to stay there again, but for a longer period of time.

I'm sad that vacation is already over, but I'm so happy that vacation is over.  Does that make sense?  Where to next year?
